You’re navigating one of the most complex legal systems in the country — without an attorney — while also trying to hold down a job, raise your kids, and keep your life from falling apart. You know you need help. But you can’t afford a $5,000 retainer and $400-an-hour billing rates.
That’s exactly why Pro Se Coach exists.
I’m Ben Schooley. I’m not an attorney, and I don’t give legal advice. What I do is something different — and for many Texans navigating family law on their own, it has made all the difference.
What I Do For You
Strategy First — Always
The most overlooked element in a pro se family law case is strategy. Most people react to what’s happening — they file things when they’re upset, respond when they feel backed into a corner, and make decisions based on emotion rather than long-term goals.
That approach rarely wins.
When you work with me, we start by building a real strategy. We look at your facts, your goals, your judge, your county, and the realistic range of outcomes in your situation. We define what victory looks like for you — whether that’s primary custody, 50/50, a fair property settlement, or simply not being financially destroyed — and we build a plan to get there.
Strategy is the foundation. Everything else flows from it.
Motion Preparation and Delivery
Once we have your strategy, I help you build the paperwork to execute it. I work with you on your motions, petitions, responses, and supporting documents — making sure they are properly formatted for your Texas county, procedurally correct, and aligned with your strategy.
I don’t just hand you a template and wish you luck. I work through the documents with you, make sure they say what they need to say, and ensure they’re ready to file.
E-Filing Support
Texas courts use the eFileTexas system, and for many pro se litigants, the first encounter with it is a frustrating one. Wrong file types, missing envelopes, rejected submissions — it’s easy to make errors that delay your case or create procedural problems.
I help you navigate the e-filing process so your documents get submitted correctly, to the right court, in the right format, on time.
Case Law Research
Judges respond to well-supported arguments. If you walk into court (or submit a motion) without case law backing up your position, you’re leaving one of your most powerful tools unused. I help you find the relevant precedent that supports your position — real cases, properly cited, from Texas courts.
This is something AI cannot reliably do for you. It takes experience and verification to get case law right.
Schedule and Deadline Management
Family law cases have deadlines — and missing them can be catastrophic. Response deadlines, discovery deadlines, hearing dates, mediation windows — I help you track all of it so nothing slips through the cracks. I put your key dates on my calendar and make sure you’re reminded and prepared well in advance.
Hearing Preparation
Walking into a courtroom unprepared is one of the scariest — and most common — mistakes pro se litigants make. I do extensive hearing prep with my students: what to expect, how to present your evidence, how to conduct yourself, how to respond to opposing counsel, and how to speak to the judge effectively.
You won’t walk in blind. You’ll walk in ready.
What My Students Say
“Ben jumped in, gave me some great suggestions for how to take control of my case, helped me formulate a plan, and assisted with all of my paperwork. He knows his stuff and saved me thousands in fees!” — Jason W., Pro Se Father
“Ben was able to jump in, pick me up, and give me HOPE. Ultimately we put together a great strategy, he helped me through all the paperwork and scheduling, and my life is so much calmer now.” — Jessica J., Pro Se Mother
“The team was able to help me change the direction of my case, helped me get through all the motions and paperwork, schedule my hearings, prepare me for the hearings, and I was truly coached to success.” — Brad S., Pro Se Father
We Are Not a Substitute for an Attorney
I want to be clear about this: if your situation requires legal advice, I will tell you that, and I can connect you with attorneys in my network for review and consultation. What I do is coaching and support — not legal representation. For many pro se litigants, that combination is exactly what they need.
